In antiquity, the Egyptians, Chinese and Amerindians, attributed several properties to the Mother of Pearl. This hard substance, white, with iridescent reflections, is found in shells of some mollusks in fresh and salty waters. It was thought to protect the skin and fortify the body. It comes in different shades of cream, pink, yellow, grey and blue-green.
